Test Code: AscitC Preferred Name Ascitic fluid - chemistry
|Image||Specimen Type||Specimen Volume||Tube Type|
||Note: More than one tube type is required to be collected for this test. Refer collection notes.
||Asctic Fluid AND||5 mL||Sterile container 70 mL (yellow lid)
||Blood (adult)||3 mL||PST 4.5 mL Li Heparin Gel (Lt Green top)
||Blood (paediatric or neonatal)||500 µL|| PST Li Heparin Paed (Light Green top)
A blood specimen needs be collected at the same time (or within 24 hours of the collection of the ascitic fluid) so that ratios can be calculated.
Albumin and LD are routinely performed if ascitic fluid chemistry is requested. Specifically request other tests if required.
APPLICATION: Investigation of ascites, peritoneal fluid collections.
INTERPRETATION: Protein levels >25 g/L (exudate) favour inflammatory or malignant ascites. Amylase activity is increased in pancreatitis.
