COLLECTION NOTES
A blood specimen needs be collected at the same time (or within 24 hours of the collection of the ascitic fluid) so that ratios can be calculated.
GENERAL NOTES
Albumin and LD are routinely performed if ascitic fluid chemistry is requested. Specifically request other tests if required.
APPLICATION: Investigation of ascites, peritoneal fluid collections.
INTERPRETATION: Protein levels >25 g/L (exudate) favour inflammatory or malignant ascites. Amylase activity is increased in pancreatitis.
