Urine arsenic can also be performed and is often the preferred specimen.

GENERAL NOTES



Hair root measurements are now discouraged and can take 2-3 months for the results. Hair root testing will soon be unavailable.

APPLICATION:  Monitoring of arsenate therapy when used in rare forms of leukaemia.
Suspected arsenic poisoning.  Acute poisoning may cause abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea as well as convulsions, cardiovascular collapse, coma and death.  Chronic poisoning causes diarrhoea, pigmentation and scaling of skin, hyperkeratosis of palms and soles, hepatomegaly, hair loss, peripheral neuropathy and Mees lines.
Arsenic is found in house and garden pesticides.  Industrial exposure can occur with ceramics, dyes, wood products and paint.
