APPLICATION: Both anti-thyroid microsomal (Thyroid Peroxidase) antibodies and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies are tested.
INTERPRETATION: Thyroid peroxidase antibodies and thyroglobulin antibodies are strongly associated with autoimmune thyroid disease, occurring in most patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. They may be present in up to 20% of apparently healthy individuals, where their presence indicates an increased risk of developing an overt thyroid disorder.
