COLLECTION NOTES

Collect serum for this test.

If 17OHP blood spot profile is requested, refer to 17-hydroxy progesterone - blood spots.
NOTE:  17OHP blood spots are ONLY to be used as part of a blood spot profile for monitoring treatment of patients with CAH.
Blood spot 17OHP can NOT be used for babies less than 3 months of age.

GENERAL NOTES

APPLICATION:  Diagnosis and management of congenital adrenal hyperplasia.  Some authorities recommend its inclusion in neonatal screening programmes.  In mildly affected patients, measurement after adrenal stimulation with synacthen may be required to confirm the diagnosis.

INTERPRETATION:  An increased level indicates 21-hydroxylase deficiency.  In patients with CAH due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency: monitoring of treatment, which may require levels at various times of the day (see 17-hydroxy progesterone - blood spots also).

UNITS:  nmol/L.
