GENERAL NOTES



SPECIMEN COLLECTION:
1. Do not collect specimen until patient is in a negative pressure isolation room.
2. Wear goggles, gloves, long sleeved gown and duck-bill mask to collect specimen.
3. Collect a nasal flocked swab from each nostril and a throat flocked swab.
4. Avoid contaminating the outside of the specimen collection tubes and place in biohazard bag.
5. On exiting the room wash hands thoroughly.
6. It is not recommended to use the Lamson Pneumatic system but deliver specimen to laboratory by hand.
7. Indicate URGENT nature of the specimens to Pathology.

TESTING: 1. Please telephone the Medical Microbiologist (3163 7809) to arrange SARS PCR or Avian Influenza PCR testing as the specimen need to be transported to QHSS Virology (FSS) and testing has to be arranged with the Public Health Unit. SARS, MERS and Avian Influenza are also notifiable to Public Health on provisional grounds.
