Please Note: This is not a free fatty acid (please refer to FFA on Path Test). This is a Fatty Acid Profile.
The patient should ideally fast overnight for 9 - 12 hours.Please note on slip if patient is fasting or not. Exception is given to infants and persons suspected or known to have certain medical conditions where prolonged fasting is not possible. In such instances, a sample taken just before the next feed/meal is acceptable. All known metabolic patients being monitored should not be turned away from collection. If there are any queries with this please contact the Metabolic lab on 3163 8409 during office hours or the metabolic scientist on-call after hours.
The patient must not consume any alcohol for 24 hours before the specimen is drawn.
Send on a COLD PACK, to arrive in the laboratory within 2 hours of collection.

GENERAL NOTES

This test is a comprehensive profile that provides information regarding mitochondrial and peroxisomal fatty acid metabolism, and the patient's nutritional status. It is useful for monitoring patients undergoing diet therapy for mitochondrial and peroxisomal disorders and for monitoring the response to provocation tests (fasting tests, loading tests).
