GENERAL NOTES

HIV proviral DNA may be detectable in white blood cells from HIV infected individuals as early as 2-3 weeks after HIV exposure. Detection of proviral DNA is the test of choice for early diagnosis of acute HIV infection when early anti retroviral therapy is planned, or in detecting potential vertical HIV transmission.

HIV serology remains the most appropriate HIV diagnostic test for established adult HIV infection which characterises most new HIV diagnoses.

Indications for HIV proviral DNA testing:

1. Investigation of the neonate of an HIV positive mother.
2. Diagnosis of an acute illness consistent with primary HIV infection treatment with antiretroviral therapy is being considered.
3. Monitoring the recipient of a high risk exposure to HIV who is receiving post exposure prophylaxis.
