GENERAL NOTES

APPLICATION:  Monitoring diabetes mellitus; assessment of overall control of blood glucose over the 1-3 weeks prior to specimen collection.  Used in  patients with shortened red cell survival.  HbA1C is used for monitoring diabetes mellitus in patients with normal red blood cell survival.

INTERPRETATION:  Increased values suggest significant persistent hyperglycaemia.  Levels are lower in the presence of hypoalbuminaemia.  The clinical utility of the test is still controversial and assay of glycated haemoglobin is preferred in patients who do not have shortened red cell survival.
