Jejunal Biopsy. Put on a cold pack within 10 minutes of collection. Deliver to the laboratory within 5 hours of collection (the specimen must be kept cold from collection until delivered to the laboratory).
Mater Pathology staff perform regular rounds of theatre and gastroenterology suites Monday to Friday.
GENERAL NOTES
APPLICATION: Investigation of patients with diarrhoea, and/or colic in whom sugar intolerance is suspected; investigation of those with small bowel malabsorption.
INTERPRETATION: All brush border enzymes are reduced in subtotal villus atrophy; lactase is very low in lactose intolerance; sucrase and isomaltase are very low in sucrose intolerance.
