24 hour urine collection is preferred but if a random urine is collected it MUST be acidified within 1 hour of collection - send to the laboratory immediately post collection. Where possible, list medications the patient is taking. All timed and 24hr urine oxalates require patient height and weight to calculate excretion/day and correction for surface area.

APPLICATION: Diagnosis of primary or secondary hyperoxaluria in patients with renal calculous disease.
INTERPRETATION: Elevation indicates hyperoxaluria; grossly elevated levels occur in primary hyperoxaluria. Very high levels are also seen in patients with ethylene glycol poisoning.
